Lionel Hampton – Them Changes

Them Changes, an 8-track release by Lionel Hampton, was produced at a strange (albeit wonderful) time in Hamp's career. Lionel was working with several labels. During the 1970s, he released (at least) 5 albums (on Vinyl LP) through the Brunswick label.
These albums were unique due to the fact that they were a sharp turn from Hamp's usual all-vibes-no-voice style. On these releases, Hamp was singing himself. They also had that funky 1970s undertone to them. Most of the songs consisted of Hamp's unique take on classic tunes.

Essential Media Group LLC re-released a remastered version of this LP on iTunes on 12-23-2008. They also made it available on Amazon as a digital release and a manufactured-on-demand CD-R on 01-29-2009.

What is the most popular jazz instrument?

So, I was wondering what the most popular jazz instrument was. Turns out, I wasn't the only one wanting to know the answer to this question. I saw several people asking that same question, one of them being on Yahoo Answers. No, obviously, it's a tough question to answer because of the following reasons:

  • People have their own personal favorite instrument(s). So, their opinion may be biased when it comes to what is the 'most popular' jazz instrument
  • Technically speaking, there is no such thing as a 'jazz instrument', because just about ANY instrument can be used in a jazz ensemble of jazz band. Hell, snapping your fingers could be considered a jazz instrument as there are a million examples of people snapping their fingers on a jazz recording or during a jazz band's performance
So, I decided to get extra geeky with it. I decided to open up Google KeyWord Planner. Then, I copied the names of instruments that were considered 'jazz instruments' from this large list.

Then, I pasted these instruments in, revealing how often people searched any given instrument name on Google. Here's the rundown:

The piano is definitely the most popular jazz instrument. People search google 500,000+ times every month for the word 'piano'.

Runners up include:
  • Guitar with 450,000 monthly searches. Of course, this can be a confusing answer because there's no way to tell whether or not the person searching for the word guitar is searching for a 'jazz guitar'
  • The kora has 301,000 monthly searches, but (again) the word 'kora' could refer to multiple things
  • Gong has 301,000 monthly searches
  • Bass has 301,000 monthly searches, but (again) could refer to multiple things. The jazz instrument itself is called an 'upright bass'
  • Violin has 246,000 monthly searches
  • The Harp, Flute, Tuba, and Didgeridoo have 135,000 monthly searches
P.S. Just in case you were wondering what my personal favorite 'jazz' instrument is... it's the vibraphone 😄

Jeff Berman – Vibraphone Player

via Jeff Berman's FaceBook profile page

Since the vibraphone is my favorite instrument, with the piano, woodwinds, and asian style guitars falling closely behind, I try to keep track of all the vibraphone players from around the world. The ones currently out are not as nearly as popular as the old greats such as Lionel Hampton and Terry Gibbs. So, it's my duty to catalog those pushing the instrument and genre.

Jeff Berman on FaceBook

When Jeff Berman writes or composes a song, he publishes it under his publishing company Laughing Mallet Music (BMI).

Jeff Berman released "An Echoed Smile", alongside fellow acoustic guitar playing artist Matt Balitsaris, under Palmetto Jazz / Palmetto Records circa 1996/1997

Circa 2012, Jeff Berman teamed up with AppalAsia, a unique project which fused elements of "mountain" music and Asian style music. The name itself is a play on words, combining the words Appalachian (as in The Appalachian Mountains) and Asia (as in Asian countries). AppalAsia released one CD entitled "Pu An"

He also was filmed performing 4 of the 7 songs from "Pu An" here. However, he isn't playing a vibraphone, he is performing on a dulcimer http://www.appalasia.com/Multi_Media.htm

Regena Hoye: An American original. Jazz is a style that defines the American origin. Since my teenage years, while listening to the phonograph in the basement of my relative’s home, I have loved jazz.
I started a vinyl collection of all the iconic vocalists and instrumentalists that my small budget could afford. And I was very proud of my twenty LP’s. Never in my life did I think that I would sing beside them: in spirit.
I originally wrote a few songs for my self-published children’s book. My songs have been sitting in a drawer for years. One day I looked at them and thought that maybe someone would enjoy them. I was born in 1948, so this is a late effort. In 2012, I walked into a recording studio and met a talented producer. And a year later I present my first CD, “Soft Summer Night.”
